The St. Vitus Cathedral is the biggest and most famous landmark in Prague built in 10th century. It is a magnificent example of Gothic architecture in the Czech Republic.

After 100 years, all seven bells of the church rang together on 12th May 2012. This happened for the first time since 1916 that people could hear the sound of bells. In the middle of the World War I, the military seized three of bells as a common policy to use their metal during wartime in the manufacturing of guns. The three bells named after their predecessors, Dominik, Maria and Jesus, were recast to take their position with other bells at the Cathedral’s bell tower.

The place appears complete after adding three new bells hanging with others, especially the biggest bells in the Czech Republic, Zikmund.

The cathedral bell-ringer, Tomas Starecky said: “All bells finally give the cathedral a sound it deserves.”It is a memorial day in the history of Prague. The bells have added to the beauty of the church.

Wonder in the historic world of the city by exploring the hidden treasury of Prague. To see three new bells of the St. Vitus Cathedral, right away avail flight to Prague and book hotels in Prague well in advance.

Kid’s in Prague will now have a space solely dedicated to them, to display their musings and imaginations. An art gallery for children exclusively opened in March this year. The organisers believe that through exposure to art and giving them an outlet to display their works, children will be more creative in their works.

Project co-coordinator, Katerina Samkova wanted a different approach than the ‘Do not touch’, ‘Do not shout’ signs you find in galleries all over.

Contemporary artists were commissioned to design a wing where children could contribute. In its first exhibition through June, children will make butterflies out of plastic bottles and will hang them in forests painted on the walls. They will also use magazines to cut out pictures to put in frames that are painted on the walls.

The art director of the gallery, Monika Burian Jourdan, hopes that this gallery will prove instrumental in making art a part of life for children.

The first exhibition was in collaboration with the artists and children. The artists were the brain behind the ideas while the children executed the artworks. Recycled materials were used to create expressions of beauty.

So the next time you find yourself for extended holidays in Prague with your little ones, be sure to visit this art gallery for children in Prague.

Tanec Praha (Dance Prague) festival is a contemporary dance platform offered to talented international dance companies and dancers from countries around the world. Local dance companies in Czech Republic also participate in the festival to showcase their best and brightest talent. Since its inception, the festival has helped develop and nurture contemporary dance by highlighting the creativeness of choreographers and the talent of highly gifted artists.

The festival which is held throughout the month of June, traces its history to the summer of 1989 when a few dance performances were held at the Prague Cultural Summer by the PKS Agency (Prague Cultural Centre) mainly to entertain tourists. But if the talent was to bloom, it needed a bigger and better platform. Realizing this, the Ministry of Culture and the Prague Municipal Authority helped Tanec Praha in preserving the dance form and ultimately reach the pinnacle of success. Every passing year had brilliant and unforgettable performances by gifted dancers.

Tanec Praha also organizes various workshops for children and students. Plus, accompanying programme for professional dancers and dance students are aimed to brush up their skills as a highly technical dancer. The children workshop acquaints the kids and their parents to the diverse forms of dances, thereby boost their liking for a particular dance form.

The event will be organized from 28th May, 2012 to 29th June, 2012 at Ponec Theatre. Visit Tanec Praha at http://www.tanecpraha.cz/ for more details.

One of the most international renowned music festivals in the world, the Prague Spring International Music Festival will be held for the 67th time in Prague from 12th May, 2012 till 3rd June, 2012. Respected classical musicians from all over the world will participate in the festival to show their audiences, the true taste of artistic music through beautiful works of operas, soloists and performers.

The Prague Spring International Music Festival started in 1946 when the whole of Czechoslovak Republic was celebrating the first anniversary of the end of Second World War. Incidentally, it was also the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of Czech Philharmonic. Music was life for the people of Prague and music festivals were organized even during the difficult years of war under different names and by individual composers.

The artistic director of Czech Philharmonic and great conductor, Rafael Kubelík took initiative to organize the Prague Spring festival. The move was welcomed by lovers of music and politicians.

At the Prague Spring festival, Czech music is celebrated with much aplomb with concentration on Czech composers such as Bedřich Smetana, Antonín Dvořák, Leoš Janáček, and Bohuslav Martinů. Since the inception of the festival, international composers from the USA (such as conductor Leonard Bernstein), Great Britain, and France, top soloists, singers, and conductors from the Soviet Union are also participating.

Debutantes are given an equal chance to feature their talent at the Prague Spring Festival. Winners at the international competition of young talents, such as pianist Sviatoslav Richter and the cellist Mstislav Rostropovich have carved their name with pride in the world of music.

According to the established tradition, a concert of the Czech Philharmonic conducted by talented Russian Vasily Petrenko will be held on May 12 to mark the start of the festival. The festival will end on June 3 with performance by Prague Symphony Orchestra.

Prague.com offers a fine selection of hotels in Prague and flights to Prague if you plan to visit the city in the coming months.

Witches Night is celebrated with great gusto in Prague. You really do want to be in Prague to celebrate this fest in Prague on 30th April. Bonfires symbolising the burning of the witches can be found all over the city, but the best ones are found at Petrin Hill. Continue reading →

April 30th is celebrated as Witches Night in Prague and all over the Czech Republic. Brooms symbolising witches are burnt all throughout the Czech Republic. This night in Prague may seem like Halloween or even a throwback to the Middle Ages. Sounds of witches or hags cackling or laughing resonate the air. Traditionally, brooms are burnt to keep the witches at bay. Young couples leap through the fires of the dying embers. This can be termed as a fertility rite. Men leave fresh cut branches on the doorsteps of the woman they love.

While it is officially illegal to light a fire within the city limits, unofficial bonfires are lit up on Petrin Hill. The festival shares many common features with other festival.

Some Czechs believe that it originates from the Iron Age, when Celts occupied Moravia and Bohemia. From this theory it has its origins in Beltane, called Beltzine in Czech. It is still a celebrated holiday in the Isle of Man, Ireland and Scotland. Yet others hold the belief that it has its roots in the Walpurgis Night, a traditional festival German and Scandinavian festival, descending from the Vikings itself. The name of the festival on the other hand suggests that it traces its origins in the witch trial where hundreds of women were burned at stake in the 16th and 17th century. Today, however, it is a lighthearted affair and a reason to celebrate.

Book cheap flights to Prague and be sure to be in Prague to celebrate the Witches Night in Prague.
