Svatomartinská Husa and Young Wine: Where to Eat St Martin's Goose in Prague

roast goose red cabbage dumplings

On 11 November Prague orders roast goose with red cabbage and dumplings, and opens the first bottles of Svatomartinské young wine at 11:11. Here is where to book and how early you need to move.

What's on the plate

St Martin's Day falls on Wednesday 11 November 2026. Across the Czech Republic it means one meal: svatomartinská husa, roast goose served with red cabbage and dumplings. The dumplings are usually bread or potato, and often both.

Fuller menus usually open with kaldoun, a clear goose broth, often served with liver dumplings. Goose pâté or rillettes are common starters. In some places the meal ends with sweet buns.

Restaurants don't keep the dish to the day itself. Many goose menus run for a few days either side of 11 November, and some stay on longer. Demand is real. Expats.cz reported that St Martin's Day can lift restaurant sales by up to 50%, and the popular dining rooms fill well before the date.

Svatomartinské: the young wine

The goose comes with the first wine of the new vintage. Svatomartinské is a protected brand. Only wines that pass an independent sensory panel may carry it, so the label is a reliable sign of quality rather than a seasonal gimmick.

By tradition the bottles open at 11:11 on 11 November. Under the Czech Wine Fund's rules, sales may start on the preceding Friday when the 11th falls between Saturday and Tuesday. In 2025, for example, the release came on Friday 7 November. Because 2026's St Martin's Day is a Wednesday, expect the first glasses on the day itself.

Most goose menus offer the young wine by the glass or as a pairing. A white Müller-Thurgau or a light red Saint Laurent cuts nicely through the richness of the bird.

Where to eat goose in Prague

Menus, dates and prices for 2026 are set by each venue, so check with the restaurant before you book.

Classic Czech dining rooms

  • Červený jelen, Hybernská 5, Prague 1. This is a good choice for groups.
    • It serves a whole bird or a leg, plus kaldoun and goose pâté, and small sweet buns for dessert.
    • Reservations are taken through the online form on its website.
    • Nearest metro: Náměstí Republiky (line B).
  • Lokál and Café Savoy. Expats.cz singles out both as places where goose, cabbage and dumplings stay the top order every November.
  • Výčep. It has served a goose leg and kaldoun for St Martin's.
  • The Monkey Bar, Opletalova 21, Prague 1. This was one of the more affordable options in 2025.
    • Duck rillettes.
    • Goose broth with liver dumplings.
    • Confit goose leg with red cabbage and dumplings.
    • Brownie.
  • Vinohradský parlament, by Náměstí Míru (metro A). It has stretched its goose season well past St Martin's Day in past years.

Fine dining

  • Alcron Restaurant. Its 2025 menus ended before St Martin's Day itself, and it offered 3- and 4-course menus and a sharing menu for groups.
  • 420 Restaurant. In 2025 it offered a goose leg, kaldoun and dessert.
  • Food Lab, Haštalská 4, Prague 1. It has run a goose menu around St Martin's.
  • Atelier Red & Wine, Rošických 603/4, Prague 5. It takes a more unusual approach, with Hungarian goose roasted on bubbles, foie gras, and kaldoun served with kontušovka herbal liqueur.

With a view of the river or the Castle

  • Občanská Plovárna. In 2025 it sold a set menu that included a bottle of wine if you bought it early, for dinners in mid-November. If it repeats the offer, you need to commit early.
  • Tři Grácie, Novotného lávka 200/3, Prague 1. It sits right by Charles Bridge.
  • Altány Kampa, Nosticova 2a, Prague 1.
  • Vinobona, Nový Svět 11, Hradčany. It has served the menu at lunch as well as dinner, which helps if evenings are booked out.
  • Vojanův dvůr, U Lužického semináře 21, Malá Strana. It serves a 4-course menu, with five of its own beers on tap.
  • Hostinec na Výtoni, below Vyšehrad. It focuses on duck rather than goose.

Brewpubs and beyond the centre

  • Pivovar Římská, Římská 45, Prague 2. Its goose has run alongside a special Altbier 12°.
  • Folklore Garden, Prague 5. It offers a 4-course menu with cimbalom music, but in 2025 it finished before St Martin's Day.
  • Hliněná bašta, Újezdská 619, Průhonice, just outside the city. It is the place for a whole roast goose to share.
  • Pivovar Spojovna, Kunratice. It serves St Martin's wines and recommends booking online.

Young wine and goose on Náplavka

For a less formal night, the Svatomartinské slavnosti a pečená husa festival takes over the Náplavka embankment on Rašínovo nábřeží, Prague 2. The 2025 edition was the 14th.

In 2025 it brought together more than 20 winemakers from Bohemia and Moravia. Entry was free, and you bought a festival glass, with wine poured only into those glasses. Check the 2026 entry and glass costs before you go. To get there, take the metro to Karlovo náměstí (line B) or a tram to Výtoň. Wrap up warmly, because the river wind in November is serious. Confirm the 2026 date and times with the organiser or on Kudy z nudy, the Czech tourism board's events site.

Booking tips

  • Book in late October. Most restaurants publish their goose menus and open reservations during October, and the best-known places fill within days.
  • Go before or after the 11th. The days around St Martin's Day are easier to book than the 11th itself, especially at lunch.
  • Order a whole bird for a group. If you have four or more people, a whole goose is usually better value than individual legs. Some kitchens ask you to pre-order it.
  • Watch the end dates. Some menus finish before 11 November, as Alcron and Folklore Garden did in 2025, so check the dates before you plan around them.
  • Leave room or skip the starter. Plenty of diners now skip the starter. Goose with two kinds of dumplings is a full meal on its own.

Menus, prices and dates change every year, and the 2026 details will appear through October, so check before you go with the restaurant or the festival organiser.
